NewsletterDirectory.co dashboard

  • Control Panel: The NewsletterDirectory.co is a very utilitarian, no-frills experience. Newsletter publishers have only a few options at their disposal: account settings, newsletter profile settings, AdZone settings (where the HTML code is available for copy/paste), and the ability to add a new AdZone.
  • Reporting: Reporting is virtually non-existent within the NewsletterDirectory.co admin control panel. On the home dashboard, the current month’s pending earnings are displayed for each newsletter and CTR is displayed for each AdZone. Individual AdZone pages show average CTR, pending earnings for the current month, and earnings for the prior month. That’s it. There is no ability to select a custom date range, no way to display any impression data, and no way to see any data at all older than the previous month.

Editor’s NewsletterDirectory.co Review

Founded by LaunchBit in 2011, NewsletterDirectory.co offers a meeting place for advertisers and email newsletter publishers.

A newsletter publisher interested in monetizing an email list can add his newsletter to the directory and be found by potential advertisers. Upon getting an account approved, a dozen or more CPC ads are made available in the publisher’s account, from advertisers such as Best Buy, PRWeb, and smaller tech startups.

Additional advertisers are able to find newsletters in the directory and submit ad sponsorship requests via a Web form through NewsletterDirectory.co to the publisher.

To monetize an upcoming email campaign with NewsletterDirectory.co, an approved publisher needs to login to the account and create an AdZone.

To create a new AdZone, click “Add AdZone”, select size of the unit, and copy/paste the HTML snippet into the appropriate place in the email template. Out of the gate, only 468×60 banners are available, as well as 125×125 with text for MailChimp customers. These ads are all CPC-based.

NewsletterDirectory.co does give publishers the ability to block individual ad creatives from displaying, which is a valuable feature if any of the ad units are offensive or otherwise unwanted for one reason or another. As advertisers discover a publisher’s newsletter in the directory, they may reach out with proposals to run different ad unit sizes and with different payment terms, such as CPM. But as previously mentioned, with new accounts only a handful of CPC ads are available.

The ease of getting up and running with NewsletterDirectory.co is definitely a big upside. Within 24 hours, a newsletter publisher can be running new ads on his email campaigns.

Unfortunately, there are a few downsides to NewsletterDirectory.co, and one of the biggest downsides is the admin control panel and reporting.

There’s no nice way to put it: the reporting interface is downright lackluster.

While current month’s earnings are displayed on the home dashboard and CTR and previous month’s earnings can be found within each individual AdZone’s page, that’s about all the data one can get.

There is no way to create a report based on a custom time frame, no way to filter data by email campaign, no way to filter data by advertiser or ad creative, and no way to see any click or impression totals. There also doesn’t seem to be a way to see any data older than the previous month. So if it’s March 1 and you’re looking for January data, you’re out of luck.

As for AdZone management, the features here appear to be somewhat lacking as well. While a publisher has the option to create as many new AdZones as he desires, it’s hard to tell them apart, as there is no option for naming the zones.

Multiple 468×60 zones are all referred to as “[Newsletter Name] (#[XXXXX]) Image (468×60)”, where “[Newsletter Name]” is the name of the publisher’s newsletter and “[XXXXX]” is the unique five-digit code that represents that particular AdZone. So the only unique name is a seemingly random five-digit ID number, which is not the best naming convention if you’re handling several zones.

It would be ideal if NewsletterDirectory.co allowed the publisher to specify a unique name for each zone, but such is not the case unfortunately.

Further complicating matters is the inability to delete an AdZone. If you’ve accidentally created a zone you no longer need, there is no way to remove it from the account.

Regarding payment terms, NewsletterDirectory.co pays on a Net-15 schedule, which is just about as good as it gets. The only offer payment via PayPal, which is convenient for most, but some may wish for paper check or direct deposit, options which are typically offered by most other ad networks.

Account help is minimal. There is not a true knowledge base; instead there is only a short FAQ page. In fairness, this may speak more to the simplicity of the product rather than any real shortcomings in the support department. There probably just isn’t much of a need for NewsletterDirectory.co to offer a 50,000-word knowledge base or wiki.

LaunchBit also offers an email report card that will show users of MailChimp, Constant Contact, or Campaign Monitor the quality of their newsletter with a letter grade attached to a custom infographic.
