ChatGPT ads are now sold in 89 countries. OpenAI announced on October 21, 2026 that it is adding 26 markets, 14 of them in Latin America, and that more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns since ads launched about eight months ago. With more than 1.2 billion weekly users, ChatGPT is quickly becoming a new place where advertisers spend money that used to go to search and the open web.

For publishers, that raises two practical questions. Will ChatGPT ads pull budget away from the ads on your site, and is there anything you can do about it? This guide pulls together what OpenAI and independent reporting have confirmed, what is still uncertain, and the moves that make sense now.

What Are ChatGPT Ads?

ChatGPT ads are sponsored placements shown inside ChatGPT conversations to users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, and Enterprise subscriptions stay ad-free. OpenAI says the ads are labeled, kept separate from ChatGPT's answers, and do not influence what the assistant says, and that conversations are kept private from advertisers.

Advertisers buy them through OpenAI's own Ads Manager or through technology partners. OpenAI describes the pitch as reaching people "as they explore, compare and decide what to buy," which is the same intent stage that has made search ads so valuable for two decades.

How Fast ChatGPT Ads Are Growing

The numbers OpenAI and outside reporters have shared show a business scaling quickly from a standing start.

  • Ads testing began in the U.S. in February 2026, according to CNBC.
  • Annualized revenue run rate went from about $100 million in March to $1 billion in August, per CNBC and OpenAI's August 31 announcement.
  • Availability grew from more than 40 countries at the end of August to 89 countries on October 21.
  • More than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns, OpenAI says.

The Catch: Trial Advertisers vs. Active Advertisers

The 100,000 figure counts every advertiser that has ever run a campaign. AdExchanger, citing reporting by The Information and research from Dan Salmon at New Street Research, notes there were about 60,000 active advertisers as of early October. That gap suggests a meaningful share of brands tried ChatGPT ads and have not stayed, at least for now.

AdExchanger also reports that the $1 billion run rate falls short of OpenAI's initial forecast of $2.4 billion in ad revenue for 2026, and that many advertisers want stronger measurement before they commit bigger budgets. OpenAI told the publication it is building measurement alongside the expansion and testing new formats, including a more visual ad with larger images for people using image generation.

Why ChatGPT Ads Matter for Publishers

Advertisers do not get new money because a new channel appears. Budgets move. Three signals suggest some of that movement will come from places publishers depend on.

  1. Buyers are already focused on AI answers. In IAB's 2026 Outlook September update, "optimizing content for AI-generated answers" became the top area of increased focus for U.S. ad buyers, at 76%, up from 73% in January. "Adapting to evolving consumer behavior (e.g., AI-driven search)" was the top investment challenge, at 44%.
  2. The ad sits where the click used to be. When a reader asks ChatGPT to compare products and gets an answer with an ad beside it, that is a moment that might otherwise have produced a search, a click to a review site, and a programmatic or affiliate impression on that site.
  3. Measurement is the gate. AdExchanger reports that many advertisers want stronger measurement before they put more budget into ChatGPT ads. OpenAI says it is building exactly that, and once tests turn into steady line items, the money has to come from existing channels.

None of this means display revenue will collapse next quarter. A $1 billion run rate is still small next to the search and social ad markets, and ChatGPT ads still lack the measurement many buyers want. But the direction is clear enough to plan for.

What Publishers Should Do About ChatGPT Ads

1. Track AI referrals as their own channel

Set up a segment in your analytics for referrals from chatgpt.com and other assistants. Watch sessions, pages per session, and RPM separately from search, so you can see whether AI answers send you readers or replace them.

2. Make your pages easy for AI to cite

Clear headings, direct answers near the top, original data, and charts with source notes give AI systems a reason to reference you. Our guide to the shift from search engines to answer engines covers the basics.

3. Sell the intent ChatGPT cannot see

OpenAI keeps conversations private from advertisers. Publishers can offer something different: contextual packages built around a known topic, audience, and first-party data. Direct and private marketplace deals let you price that context instead of competing only in the open auction.

4. Use AI chat on your own site

The same format can work for you. An on-site assistant that answers reader questions can carry sponsorships or native placements. We covered the options in chatbot monetization in 2026.

5. Get paid when AI uses your content

If AI tools are going to answer questions with your work, licensing is another revenue line to explore. See our breakdown of how AI content licensing pays publishers.

Frequently Asked Questions About ChatGPT Ads

Can publishers sell ads inside ChatGPT?

No. ChatGPT ads are sold by OpenAI to advertisers through its Ads Manager and partners. There is no publisher revenue share announced for ads shown in ChatGPT.

Do ChatGPT ads change ChatGPT's answers?

OpenAI says no. It states that ads are clearly labeled, kept separate from answers, and do not influence what ChatGPT says. AdExchanger notes that newer formats are labeled more subtly than the first version.

Who sees ChatGPT ads?

Users on the Free and Go plans in the 89 supported countries. Paid Plus, Pro, and Enterprise users do not see ads.

The Bottom Line

ChatGPT ads went from a U.S. test in February to 89 countries and a $1 billion run rate in under a year. The advertiser churn and measurement gaps show it is not a sure thing yet, but buyers are already reorganizing around AI answers. Publishers who measure AI referrals, stay citable, and sell context that chat cannot offer will be in a stronger position whichever way those budgets go.
